Spring and Summer Blooms

Spring and Summer Blooms

Well thank goodness that it is sunny today. I think everyone has had enough of the rain. Maybe it is because of the weather, but everyone at The Vintage Flower House seems to be in Summery mood!

So we started to think about all the beautiful blooms that will be coming into florist shops over the next few months.

Spring and Summer is so fantastic for flowers. With gorgeous scents, textures and fresh colours it is a truly beautiful time to get married or to just buy a bunch of seasonal blooms for your home. If you are looking for a fantastic scent to take your breath away look to gorgeous stocks. These lovely flowers will fill your house or wedding reception with a strong spring fragrance. If romance is what you are looking for treat yourselves to a bunch of perfect peonies. They may not look much when you buy them but as they unfold they will become, in our opinion, one of the most beautiful textured flowers there are.

Hydrangeas will also be entering our shops once again. There is a colour for everyone. From strong contemporary blues, to subtle whites and greens , to vintage pinks the hydrangea is a truly versatile flower and will work for any type of Spring/Summer wedding.

If you are getting married in the sunny months of this year try combining pastel shades with seasonal blooms to create a little piece of sunshine for your guests to remember.

Winter Flower Globe

Not Snow Globes but Flower Globes!

February 24th, 2010

flower-globesAt this time of year we are always extremely busy with consultations. We love meeting brides and grooms’ for the first time and hearing their ideas of what they want for their special day. There will often be something that they have seen on our website www.vintageflowerhouse.co.uk which they simply love and want to base their arrangements on.

We always tailor every design to the individual couple so that their flowers are completely unique. But there is always a design on the website that people seem to love and this year it’s all about the Flower Globe!

This beautiful design proved incredibly popular in 2009 and 2010 looks to be the same once again. The fishbowl has been around for years and is seen on many table tops at weddings; twisting calla lilies is always a favourite wedding display. But I think now brides’ are looking for something different and this design is the way forward.

It makes a modern vase look beautifully vintage. It is important to use rounded flowers so that they compliment the shape of the vase. For an Autumn and Winter wedding look to use Hellebores, with ranunculus. Bring in some stunning anemones and berries-snowberries if available- it will be a winter delight for your guests. For the sunny months bring in fabulous hydrangeas and combine them with stunning peonies and pastel roses. This summer display will capture the feeling of vintage romance in a single vase.

Being a florist at this time of year is always immense. However for us it is usually quite calm. Being a florist that only works on wedding and events means we don’t have that big rush at Valentines day. But I do remember my many years of working in a shop when Valentines was always extremely busy. I remember always being impressed by the sheer volume of Grand Prix and Passion roses that we got in and then of course we had the lovely job of prepping them all!

Roses are always the signature flower to buy for valentines, but with their wholesale price rising around the 14th, the sale price has to go up too. If you are a bit strap for cash this year why no dazzle your loved one with a bunch of red tulips instead. These striking flowers will make that red statement without blowing the budget.

Personally I am not a huge fan of red, so for those of us that aren’t keen on signature colour there are many beautiful white roses and soft pink roses which will convey that element of romance, without going down the red route. Ask your florist for pale pink Sweet Avalanche roses, or stunning white Akito roses mixed in with seasonal flowers and foliages.

Whatever you are getting up to this Valentines Day we hope it is filled with romance and of course spectacular flowers!

Catwalk Weddings!

Spring and summer trends are starting to appear on the catwalks. For the sunny months of 2010 it is all about vibrant bright colours for the more daring ones among us, while neutral shades are going to be big for those of us that like to play it a little more safely!

Spring sees a lovely calming combination of turquoise with romantic violets. As we edge into the summer months more vibrant colours are going to come into play. Different shades of yellow are going to be playing a major part in the fashion world, while Coral is back after a fanastic season in 2009. We are also going to be seeing this summer ‘Tangy Tomatoe’ red storming into our shops.

For me I think the tangy red might be a bit too out there, but I love the idea of turquoise, violets and coral and these will definitely be colours that we will be bringing into our wedding displays this year.

At The Vintage Flower House we always try to follow the latest colour trends on the catwalk and adapt them into our own designs. This way our work is always up to date, fresh and fashionable. Besides this it is always fun to experiment with different colours!

If you like the idea of these fantastic catwalk colours here are some tips to achieve a show stopping look;

Calming Turquoise: Bring in this stunning colour in hair accessories, bridesmaid dresses and ribbons. Mix with classic whites and pastel pinks. A hand tied of Akito roses wrapped in a turquoise ribbon, with wired crystal and pearl beading will really bring a beautiful and relaxing look to your wedding. In the table centres tie the turquoise ribbon round glass vases filled with white roses, pastel pink and white peonies with a sprinkling of ranunculus, for a delicate, yet fashionable arrangement.

Romantic Violets: Bring in soft violets through bouquets filled with delicate Sweet Peas. Add in lovely silver, lilac Metallina Roses to brides’ bouquets and table centres, for that shimmery look. For a more show stopping arrangement mix violet Vanda orchids with fuchsia pink Zantedeschia lilies and add in some strong green grasses to a achieve a striking catwalk look.

Happy New Year from The Vintage Flower House!

January 5th, 2010

RosesI always find New Year to be quite an exciting time. Everyone seems to be wanting to start something new. Whether that is changing their job, changing their house, getting active, or pursuing a hobby.

I always think it is really fantastic when people want a career change. They are tired of doing the same old job and want something new and fresh. I get told a lot that it must be so lovely to be a florist and recently I have been asked what is the best way to get into the industry.

Well first things first I love being a florist. It does have its draw backs, it is very cold, there are many early starts and your hands start to look very old before their time, but if you are creative and love working with natural beautiful objects then working in the floristry industry may be the right job for you.

The best way in my opinion is to try out a day course to see if floristry is something you may enjoy. London based courses are always fantastic and will really give you that sense of what the industry is all about. Highly recommended course are the following;

www.jane-packer.co.uk

www.jamieaston.com/school.html

www.paula-pryke-flowers.com/school.html

All of the above schools run career courses too if you want to take it that step further.

Studying at college is another great way to get into the industry. The Flower and Plant Association website provides a list of courses throughout the UK as well as providing viewers with exciting information on flowers and the latest trends;

www.flowers.org.uk/index.html

If you can, combining a course with working in a shop will really give you that all round experience of what it would be like to work in the floristry industry.

If working with flowers is something that you have been thinking about for a while give it go! The florist industry is constantly evolving. It is now more than ever a fashionable and trendy industry, which is bursting with creativity.

Whatever your New Year plans are The Vintage Flower House team wishes you all the best with them for 2010!

Delightful December

December 21st, 2009

Happy Christmas from The Vintage Team! What a fantastic month it has been so far and with three days to go before Christmas this will be our final blog for 2009.

Over December we have had the pleasure of setting up beautiful flower arrangements for a range of Sussex venues, including Ockenden Manor, Buxted Park, Handcross School and the Kings church in Eastbourne to mention but a few. It has been so fantastic to be part of so many different events.

Each one has been very different but all very beautiful and wintery. The Ockenden suite looked very grand with our silver candelabras, as did the hall at Handcross school. With the tables set in a banqueting style it looked almost Harry Potterish. The Orangery at Buxted was filled with candle light, with shabby chic displays and the large dramatic arrangements on the stage of the Kings church certainly made a statement. It has been really wonderful to of worked on so many different projects and we would like to thank all of our clients for working with us throughout 2009.

2010 looks to be a very busy year once again and we really look forward to getting stuck in, in the New Year.

But for now we will be closing from the 22nd of December through to the 4th January. So it just leaves me to say on behalf of The Vintage Flower House team we would like to wish you a very Happy Christmas and a fantastic New Year.

Marvellous Metallina

Metallina Rose with Vendela and Sweet Avalanche Roses, Ranunculus and Snowberries

Metallina Rose with Vendela and Sweet Avalanche Roses, Ranunculus and Snowberries

This year we have had the pleasure of being involved in so many different types of weddings. We have designed arrangements using all different colours including vintage shades, to glamorous whites, from tropical delights to pretty pinks. It has been such an exciting year with so many different types of themes and colours.

With a very busy month of weddings in December approaching, I have had a moment to reflect over the last eleven months and see what has been the flower which has come up trumps and for me without a doubt it has been the Metallina rose.

As ever the vintage theme seems to be endless. Brides and grooms’ are still coming to us today looking for those delicate antique shades that will create their desired vintage look. Whenever I have suggested this beautiful rose everyone seems to get very excited.

The Metallina rose is one of my favourites. Its stunning petals have a mixture of soft lilac and silver, while its tips look as if they have been dipped in a lovely rose pink. In my mind this rose really sums up what the theme of vintage is really all about. Pretty and chic, with an antique twist.

If you combine it with Old Dutch and Hypnoses roses you really get that wonderful antique look. However, if you mix Sweet Avalanche roses into the design then you get a fresh, lovely summery look with delicate romantic shades.

We have used this rose a number of times throughout 2009 and it is looking to be just as popular for 2010. Every time we use it whether it is in bouquets, or reception flowers the reaction is always extremely positive.

If you are searching for a vintage rose, or want something a little different have a look at the Metallina rose, I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Denbies Vineyard

November 2nd, 2009

Denbies VineyardWe did a wonderful wedding at Denbies Vineyard in Dorking last Saturday. The wine estate in Surrey is such a spectacular sight and a truly beautiful place to have your wedding reception. The long drive as you come in, surrounded by vines really does make you feel like you are in Southern France.

At Denbies they have a number of different rooms to accommodate you, we had the pleasure of decorating the very large Conservatory which can cater up to 220 people. The wonderful water feature with the glass roof really makes you feel like you are somewhere truly special.

The bride and groom had beautiful table centres of cake stands and globes, filled with vintage roses, huge hydrangea heads, and one of my favourite all time foliages, snowberries.

Denbies is certainly not just for weddings, go and enjoy this fantastic place by strolling round the beautiful vineyards and why not taste some of their wine-it would be rude not to!

For more information on having Denbies as your wedding reception check out the Denbies Vineyard website.

Bright and Bold!

September 11th, 2009

Exotic BouquetAlthough perhaps the seasons are starting to change and autumn is coming upon us, the catwalks are still sizzling in colour. The October/November edition of Wedding Flower Magazine talks about the latest trend on the catwalks and it’s all about being bright and bold.

Fantastic vibrant orange, with shocking pinks and aluminous yellows. It’s all about stopping and taking notice.

Flower arrangements can certainly compliment this trend very nicely indeed. Cymbidium orchids are perfectly suited to this trend. Large stems of green, purple and yellow orchid heads can really add that sense of colour to any wedding. The heads can be removed from the stems and wired into bouquets or the whole stem can be used in large table displays to really give that colourful impact.

Dahlias also offer vibrant colour to any arrangement. From fuchsia pinks to hot oranges these flowers are great to give you that fashionable colour combo.

Or if its vibrant reds you are looking for with that exotic twist, why not try glorisia. These great flowers are so unusual and fun and really get people talking. Here we have combined them with Grand Prix red roses and mango calla lilies. Fantastic if you want your wedding flowers to be rich in colour.
