Bright and Bold!

Exotic BouquetAlthough perhaps the seasons are starting to change and autumn is coming upon us, the catwalks are still sizzling in colour. The October/November edition of Wedding Flower Magazine talks about the latest trend on the catwalks and it’s all about being bright and bold.

Fantastic vibrant orange, with shocking pinks and aluminous yellows. It’s all about stopping and taking notice.

Flower arrangements can certainly compliment this trend very nicely indeed. Cymbidium orchids are perfectly suited to this trend. Large stems of green, purple and yellow orchid heads can really add that sense of colour to any wedding. The heads can be removed from the stems and wired into bouquets or the whole stem can be used in large table displays to really give that colourful impact.

Dahlias also offer vibrant colour to any arrangement. From fuchsia pinks to hot oranges these flowers are great to give you that fashionable colour combo.

Or if its vibrant reds you are looking for with that exotic twist, why not try glorisia. These great flowers are so unusual and fun and really get people talking. Here we have combined them with Grand Prix red roses and mango calla lilies. Fantastic if you want your wedding flowers to be rich in colour.

Orchid Arrangement

Orchid Arrangement

I can’t believe this weather!! What a shock to the system. It is as if we are living in a tropical country! But last week I was actually in one.  I had the wonderful opportunity of going to Thailand for a week. So I snuck away from the team at The Vintage Flower House and went for a couples of days to the electric city of Bangkok and then off to the exquisite island of Koh Phangan. Both were wonderful experiences, but very different.

When I have the opportunity of going anyway in the world I always look out for-that’s right-flowers. The humidity and heat of Thailand is spectacular-well pretty similar to this actually! So it was really interesting to see the types of flowers that are grown out there.

Heliconias draped the flower beds along with lots of different wonderful exotic leaves, rich in greens and purples.

However in the hotels one flower dominates- the Singapore orchid otherwise known as the Dendrobium orchid. These beautiful flowers either in white or purple were everywhere. From small reception table vases to large urns they looked spectacular and really portrayed that exotic but pretty look very cleary.

The great thing about these wonderful flowers is unlike some of their family members such as Vanda and Phalaenoposis orchids these are much cheaper, and the white flowers in particular look just beautiful in wedding work.

So if you are looking for an orchid themed wedding don’t over look these stunning flowers. They will give you that orchid look without blowing your budget.

Perfect Peonies

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

It is nearly that time of year when we are all hoping to put on our flip flops, get into our shorts and enjoy the light evenings. I also get excited at this time of year as it also means it is time for Peonies to arrive into our florist shops. These beautiful flowers are so popular with brides and here at The Vintage Flower House we work with them a great deal. All of their delicate layers combined with the variety of beautiful colours they come in make them ideal for wedding work.

It always seizes to amaze me that when you buy peonies they come in little round buds but before you know it they are transformed into the large headed stunning flowers that are simply show stopping.

Whether you want them for your wedding or just a simple vase for the home these flowers are simply fabulous and will bring a little touch of summer into your day.

Quick floristry tip; always check when buying peonies that the heads are not too sticky. This can sometimes mean they have been picked too early and may have trouble opening.

Blue Hydrangeas

Blue Hydrangeas

We had a bride come for a wedding consultation this weekend; she is getting married in spring 2010 and wanted the colour of the flowers to be mainly blue. She told us that she had been to a wedding where the bride had said her theme was also blue. They had many discussions on blue flowers, with her friend giving her lots of advice on the types of flowers she was having on her day. However on the day itself our bride said the flowers were not blue at all but purple.

At The Vintage Flower House we believe that colour is so important to any wedding or event. We always work with a signature colour and then add in layers of complementary secondary colours. This allows the theme of the chosen colour to run throughout the arrangements beautifully.

But we have noticed when it comes to the colour blue there seems to be some dispute into what flower comes under this colour category. Although perhaps blue is still not that common in the floral industry compared to pink for example, there are still some really beautiful flowers that can be used to make your wedding arrangements truly blue.

For a late winter or spring wedding Muscari is a beautiful delicate true blue flower which looks stunning in hand tied bouquets and table centres. Its little buds make this flower a popular choice with brides especially in the spring months.

Another spring blue flower which is particularly perfect if you are having a natural, wispy meadow look is Nigella. These lovely flowers come in both white and blue, but the blue flowers in brides bouquets will really convey that ‘just picked’ look, perfect for a natural looking wedding.

One of my favourite flowers the Hydrangea comes in a variety of strong blues, which makes it perfect for a summer wedding. You can either take the hydrangea apart and wire in the delicate flower heads or use the whole bloom in table centres and other large arrangements. However you use it these fantastic flowers will boldly convey your blue theme throughout.

Finally for an all year blue flower, but one which at The Vintage Flower House we like to use in the winter, it has to be thistle. This spiky flower is not for everyone but it certainly does do the dark blue colour very well. It looks fantastic in table arrangements and mixed in with whites it can create a stunning seasonal display.

So if blue is the colour for your wedding do not despair there are many beautiful true blue blooms out there just waiting to complete your big day.
