Blue Hydrangeas
We had a bride come for a wedding consultation this weekend; she is getting married in spring 2010 and wanted the colour of the flowers to be mainly blue. She told us that she had been to a wedding where the bride had said her theme was also blue. They had many discussions on blue flowers, with her friend giving her lots of advice on the types of flowers she was having on her day. However on the day itself our bride said the flowers were not blue at all but purple.
At The Vintage Flower House we believe that colour is so important to any wedding or event. We always work with a signature colour and then add in layers of complementary secondary colours. This allows the theme of the chosen colour to run throughout the arrangements beautifully.
But we have noticed when it comes to the colour blue there seems to be some dispute into what flower comes under this colour category. Although perhaps blue is still not that common in the floral industry compared to pink for example, there are still some really beautiful flowers that can be used to make your wedding arrangements truly blue.
For a late winter or spring wedding Muscari is a beautiful delicate true blue flower which looks stunning in hand tied bouquets and table centres. Its little buds make this flower a popular choice with brides especially in the spring months.
Another spring blue flower which is particularly perfect if you are having a natural, wispy meadow look is Nigella. These lovely flowers come in both white and blue, but the blue flowers in brides bouquets will really convey that ‘just picked’ look, perfect for a natural looking wedding.
One of my favourite flowers the Hydrangea comes in a variety of strong blues, which makes it perfect for a summer wedding. You can either take the hydrangea apart and wire in the delicate flower heads or use the whole bloom in table centres and other large arrangements. However you use it these fantastic flowers will boldly convey your blue theme throughout.
Finally for an all year blue flower, but one which at The Vintage Flower House we like to use in the winter, it has to be thistle. This spiky flower is not for everyone but it certainly does do the dark blue colour very well. It looks fantastic in table arrangements and mixed in with whites it can create a stunning seasonal display.
So if blue is the colour for your wedding do not despair there are many beautiful true blue blooms out there just waiting to complete your big day.
